 I now have 2 batteries that cause the overcharge condition to occur.

 Current theory is that a deep discharge of the battery can cause this to
 happen.  Both batteries were in normal operation until this happened and
 both were low enough that the machine would no longer turn on by battery
 only.

 I've got a 3rd battery under test right now...
