 There are a couple of issues here. The first is that the UI itself doesn't
 yet indicate ongoing activity.  The spec in ticket #305 calls for activity
 icons to enter the activity ring and fade into color to indicate starting
 activity instances, which directly addresses the concern in the summary.

 Of course, a general purpose busy indicator is still needed.  The new OLPC
 cursor theme posted in bug #609 now includes two varieties of busy
 cursors: one is a modified version of the pointer, which still functions
 as a pointing device, and the other replaces the pointer entirely to
 indicate that further interaction should wait until the task is completed.

 I'm not closing this ticket, since other suggestions are also presented in
 the summary, but the above may already be sufficient.
