You ended up relying more on color than a normal desktop does. (oops)
For greyscale, 3D-shading is the way to go. It worked beautifully for
MacOS on 4-bit greyscale hardware. You only need 2-bit greyscale for 3D-
shading; you have 5-bit at minimum in all modes.
For some things, like the XO icons, add fill texture. One kid could get
fish scales, another could get a honeycomb, etc.
Human eyes/brains are made to see natural-like images as being objects.
Round off the corners a tiny bit, give things texture, add shading, etc.
