#939: Can save much memory by running a simple display manager

The kludge tower used on many Linux desktops for starting up X and
applications has become amazingly high, up to and including processes
whose sole reason for existence to to allow you to have multiple display
 managers!!!!!

Needless to say, this means a bunch of processes, including shells, are
wasting RAM. Probably to the tune of megabytes!

We need to topple this tower.

GDM is an amazing bloated Gnome pig.

XDM uses an antique toolkit (Xt) we don't want on the system if we can
 avoid it.

Another option, guaranteed small and with few dependencies and baggage is
the gpe-dm (GPE is a handheld environment running on PDA's such as the
iPAQ, Zaurus, Nokia 770 etc). It's like 4kbytes of source code :-).
