 Problem does not occur if I turn off !NetworkManager.

 The method I used to do this was:

 /etc/init.d/NetworkManager stop
 killall dhclient 2> /dev/null || true
 ifconfig eth0 down
 sleep 4
 iwconfig eth0 mode managed channel 10 essid quozl.linux.org.au
 dhclient eth0
