 Some food for thought:

In the home view, the AP icon shows as fully gray when connecting, and
 fully colored when connected.
This behavior doesn't strictly follow the typical starting/initiating look
in Sugar, i.e., flashing between "white stroke and no fill" and fully
colored when "starting", and fully colored when "started". The downside of
using this approach would be to have, at the current state of Sugar, a
continuous, distracting, flashing mesh network in the home view.
Then again, trying to fit everything into the same mold sometimes just
 isn't possible :)
