 You might just hack the driver to put a red rectangle around the hardware
 cursor temporarily.

 That said, I had a talk with Keithp a bit ago about hardware cursor and
 power.  It seems like power would be the main reason to turn on the
 hardware cursor---the software cursor seems fine otherwise.  But Keithp
 points out that when the hardware cursor is enabled the overlay hardware
 is powered even when the cursor is standing still. There's thus a tradeoff
 between power consumed to re-render the cursor in software when it moves
 or its background changes, and  power consumed to leave the cursor sitting
 on the screen when nothing's happening to it.  Keithp's offhand guess was
 that the hardware cursor would be a net power loss.  We should probably
 make some power measurements before bothering with this---I'm taking the
 liberty of dropping it to low priority for now.
