#5713: After forced shutdown, journal is missing, no application will start

 After a forced shutdown, (held power button for several seconds) the XO
 booted up to a blank sugar donut with no journal. Application icons appear
 at the bottom of the screen, but none of them work. Search button does not
 bring up journal. Shutting down and restarting does not help. No way (that
 I know of) to get into the terminal or logs to see what is wrong.

 How do we proceed to get this thing un-bricked?
