 I just spoke to mstone.  The most likely situation is that the socket file
 _was_ created.  However, Activities' /tmp directories are mounted inside
 the Activity process's namespace, so no other processes can see the
 contents of /tmp.  You are running ls in a separate process, from whose
 perspective /tmp is empty.  This is the topic of #1731.

 As a workaround, I will simply place my sockets elsewhere in
 $SUGAR_ACTIVITY_ROOT.
