Comment:

 Unfortunately nothing is for free! If I just set pango.ELLIPSIZE_MIDDLE
 the palette always gets the minimum size. I tried messing around with the
 size request business a bit, but unfortunately I couldn't get that working
 (don't know well enough how that works). I think the nicest solution would
 be to set a maximum size (instead of maximum characters I do now).

 I kind of like the suggestion of Eben though, if we have to define the
 maximum character length anyway. And it's not that much code. I would make
 one adjustment: if the last word is too long, I'd add the ellipsis x
 characters from the end of the string instead. Usually important indeed,
 and if it's a url, for example, you're definitely interested in the last
 bit.
