 I'm ok with pango.ELLIPSIZE_MIDDLE.  The key here is not to clip the end
 of the string, since the "significant characters" often sit there.  That
 is, it's common for people to name things "File 1", "File 2", File 3",
 etc, with numbers or dates or other unique identifiers on the tail end of
 the string.  We want to make sure they don't all appear the same when
 listed in the Journal.

 It's great if we can get this for free.
