 Scott,

 I see you have marked this ticket as high priority and triaged yourself
 for Update.1. Has this exception to the process been discussed? If so, I
 think the reasons should be stated in the ticket. This will help the sugar
 developers to slow down our dive into insanity.

 Also, this ticket is for a quite concrete problem. I see that the patch
 includes fixes for this problem, but at the same time moves a lot of
 imports around in order to gain an indeterminate amount performance, plus
 includes part of a fix for #4909. This definitely doesn't help to keep
 things sane.
