Comment:

 Scott had a different suggestion which I like: why don't we always install
 a traceback handler which, when called, imports IPython, constructs an
 AutoFormattedTB object, and calls it with no arguments?

 This way we lazily import IPython (saving startup time) but we always get
 detailed tracebacks.
