 That was not quite coherent.  Sorry.

 The trick is: you need to use the up/down arrow keys (or direction pad
 keys) to select a stopwatch before you can control any of them with the
 gamepad shortcuts.  Currently, the Activity name in the toolbar is always
 selected initially.  It might be possible to make this more discoverable
 by making one of the stopwatches selected by default instead.
