 The error was an artifact of my running stock kqemu with cvs head qemu.

 With bernie's driver, and the attached xorg-emu.conf change,
 joyride 1336 runs in qemu at 1200x900.  Huzzah!

 Working around that ate not a few of my weeks this year.

 Can you add the patch to joyride?
 Or shall I?

 I'll do a real xorg.conf patch in a bit.
