 make sure it gets focus when we activate the journal. If anybody has a
 clue how to do this better...

 Can you attach your patch for this? I think we should put the focus on the
 search entry when the top level window gains focus, and put the focus on
 the list view when the filter combox are changed. Is this what you tried?
