 I see. So this would be for measuring out "5 car-lengths"?

 So far, the model in my head has been a digital volt-meter.  You turn it
 on, set it up appropriately, and it displays the voltage, in Volts, in a
 tight loop.  You can tell if there's random error because the numbers
 fluctuate.

 It's not obvious to me what the use case is for user-defined units.  Is
 there a use case that justifies the additional UI complexity?

 There's also the related issue of metric vs. non-metric units.
 Personally, I have no problem imposing metric units on the user, but if
 you wanted to measure in feet, we could add that too. (Feet and inches
 would be more annoying, but possible.)
