 I see two different things here. If it is a normal button, that just does
 one action and has a tooltip, then closing the palette is OK. However, if
 this is bad in the paint case. Though I wonder why this is a problem, as I
 would expect paint to use a radio button (don't have anything to test
 right now).

 And if it is a radio button then the palette shouldn't be hidden
 automatically.
