Comment:

 Ah, this is indeed a bit tricky. I see a few possibilities:

 * Modify paint so that you don't have to click, so hovering over the
 button selects the tool.
 * Either clicking on the button or changing something in the secondary
 palette selects the tool.
 * We add an extra property to the Palette: clicked-behavior, which can
 have a couple of different values: don't dismiss the palette, dismiss
 palette indefinitely, dismiss palette and re-popup if after 0.5sec or so.
 Default behavior would be to dismiss the palette.
