 It is not possible to set a debug variable for activities which have a
 space in the name -- the environment variable to be set would be
 "DEBUG_FOO BAR", which doesn't work.

 Instead, non-alphanumerics should be munged to _, so that these activities
 can be debugged/logging turned on.
