 Before the BIOS turns on the write-protect latch, it will look for a
 cryptograpically signed firmware image, and if it is present, will reflash
 the firmware from the new

 The "WP" tag does not do anything by itself - it just tells the firmware
 that the machine has completed all the manufacturing steps.  It is then up
 to the firmware to manage the hardware write-protect latch in order to
 secure itself.
