 Because after thinking about it some, 2 actually seemed simpler than 1; In
 1 you have a local container widget holding three embedded controls, while
 in 2 you have just a single embedded control. At any rate, if one of them
 doesn't work, the other one won't either.

 Yes, although I can't think of a case where it's used. (Panel -> systray
 applet -> tray icon is the only double-xembedding I can think of, but
 that's with three different processes, not just two like this one.)
