The preferred position for palettes is to the below-right. The above-left
case should only occur for objects that are in the lower-right corner of
the screen. For other icons near the bottom edge, we should align above-
right; for other icons near the right edge we should align below-left. In
all cases, we use as much of the "preferred" (below-right) orientation as
possible.
Right now, the above-left case seems to be used for all icons near the
right edge of the screen. I haven't had a mesh view with an XO close
enough to the top right edge of the screen to see if this actually pushes
the palette off of the screen in this case. Either way, the preferred
position for palettes near the right screen edge is below-left.
