Comment:

 A magnetic compass, to go with the accelerometer, to provide 3-axis
 orientation.
 Something vaguely like Hitachi's HM55B http://www.hitachi-
 metals.co.jp/e/prod/prod14/p14_02.html .
 I suspect there are also accelerometer/compass combo chips available.
