After discussing the behavior of the clipboard with Pentagram, we thought
that it might actually be wise to invert the shortcuts for the "paste" and
"paste and remove" actions. Let me first define these so we're clear on
the meaning:
Anytime a copy action is performed, via drag'n'drop, button, or keyboard
shortcut, a new clipping will appear in the clipboard. This clipping will
be at the top of the stack, and automatically selected as the "target" for
a subsequent paste. Paste targets may also be manually chosen by clicking
on the object in the clipbord.
The '''"paste"''' operation will paste the clipping currently selected as
the target. Following the operation, the clipping will remain in the
clipboard and will also remain as the target. In other words, the action
does not change the state of the clipboard.
The '''"paste and remove"''' operation will paste the clipping currently
selected as the target, and will also "pop" the clipping from the stack,
shifting the target to the previously copied item in the stack.
The clipboard is great for performing multiple copies in succession, since
they all remain there for future paste operations. It occurred to us that
the "paste and remove" operation might actually be the better default
paste action, since it makes better use of the multi-item clipboard. I
can then go into Browse, copy 3 images and a couple passages of text, and
then go into a Write document where I paste these 5 clippings one after
the other by pressing CTRL-V 5 times.
We'd previously spec'd this to be the "alternate" paste behavior (the one
assigned to ALT-V). It really comes down to the more common use case:
will kids want to copy n items and paste n items, or will they want to
copy 1 item and paste it n times? Does anyone have thoughts on this?
Oh, and I suppose we should let this ticket also serve as an
implementation ticket for the alternate "paste and remove" action, which
should also appear within the secondary rollover for items in the
clipboard.
