Comment:

Well, there is a specif set of guidelines for progress within the Journal
itself (copies, saving encoded video, downloads, etc.). This is
completely separate from in-activity progress, and in the end I think it's
up to activities to do what's best for their purposes. Here are a few
basic guidelines and controls which might apply.

There is a general guideline (though admittedly rather hidden) in HIG for
a general case. The idea is to represent things which are inactive or
absent with a white outline and no fill. Of course, this applies mainly
to icons for objects within the UI, and isn't always suitable. That can be
 found here:

 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_Human_Interface_Guidelines/The_Sugar_Interface/Icons#Active_vs._Inactive_Icons

We have a standard sugar progress bar, which can certainly be employed for
this task. There is also a design (I don't think it's implemented yet) for
a "spinner" (indeterminate progress indicator) which can be used when a
reasonable estimate of the "% complete" can't be made. I think
integration of either of these two controls within any UI should suffice.
We'll likely add further guidelines about their usage to the HIG when we
get a chance, but right now the control section is sparse and likely won't
be fleshed out before FRS. For instance, it's good practice to always
allow cancellation of any such operation.
