 It would be useful if someone, on either machine showing this problem,
 could jump through a few hoops.

 Firstly, start up the machine, get into the developer's console, and su -
 to be root.

 Then add '*.* /var/log/syslog' to /etc/syslog.conf.

 Then run '/etc/init.d/syslog restart'.

 After that, try to reproduce the problem, once it is happening reliably,
 as root, 'echo 1 > /sys/module/psmouse/parameters/tpdebug'.

 Make it jump around a few more times, then 'echo 0 >
 /sys/module/psmouse/parameters/tpdebug', and before rebooting get
 /var/log/syslog off the machine, and attach it to the bug report.

 That will hopefully give me enough information to have a better idea of
 what's breaking.
