 conference.schoolserver.laptop.org and conference.jabber.laptop.org should
 exist in DNS, but don't.

 It seems Rob forgot to mention this in his email with the server
 configuration details, but to make multi-user chat (i.e. all activities)
 work, the server needs to be able to resolve conference.<servername> in
 DNS.

 For server-to-server communication to work (not a short-term goal,
 admittedly), <servername> and conference.<servername> should be in the
 public DNS. The minimal requirements are:

 * clients can resolve <servername> for their own server
 * server can resolve <servername> and conference.<servername> for itself
 * server can resolve <servername> and conference.<servername> for every
 other server it should be able to communicate with
