 ffmpeg is not purely patent encumbered. It includes dozens of useful
 unpatented codecs such as snow and mjpeg.

 As Debian also takes a strict stand against patented codecs, it is
 probably best to use the same source code. (take advantage of work already
 done)

 It appears to me that the patented stuff was actually ripped out of the
 tarball rather than merely disabled. The web page provides contact info
 that may be useful if you need to ask questions.
