Comment:

 A recent analysis of the NAND FLASH image from a lightly-used system makes
 me think that this is a problem worth fixing.  The system in question has
 been reinstalled from scratch and then used only briefly.  It had 33 new
 dirents for either ".Xauthority", ".Xauthority-c", ".Xauthority-l", and
 ".Xauthority-n", all in /home/olpc.  It had 15 dirents for
 /root/.xauthXXXXXX{,-c,-l,-n}, and 19 for
 /home/olpc/.serverauth.NNNN{,-c,-l,-n}.

 All told, that is 77 pointless scribbles to NAND.
