Comment (by Eben):
We've discussed this again, and after considering all the factors we feel
that the use of the diamond is the best option. Emacs is not an
environment I'd wish upon the children receiving these machines, as useful
as we may find it.
We intend to place a closed diamond (U+25C6) on the CTRL key and an open
diamond (U+25C&) on the ALT key. Both keys will also retain their written
labels for added clarification; the icon will simply be used to identify
them within the UI. The use of open and closed diamonds on these two
modifier keys relates closely to their intended use as indicated above,
where the ALT-K performs a variant of the action that CTRL-K performs.
For instance, CTRL-C will mean copy, while ALT-C will mean copy and erase
(cut).
On another note, we agreed to adhere to current standards for keyboard
shortcuts where available, even though the letters used as a mnemonic may
no longer map to the terminology of the laptops. For instance, we'll
adhere to CTRL-Q and/or CTRL-W to close an activity, even though we refer
to this action as "Stop." We'll define standards in terms of either gnome
or OSX mappings, which are fairly consistent, especially for basic cross-
activity functions. We'll add detail in the HIG as things evolve further.
