Comment:

 I've attached a patch which throws away completely obsoleted nodes during
 the initial scan, thus reducing the amount of memory taken to keep track
 of them all until we throw them away later. It's tested briefly in
 isolation; will test on an XO in the morning and then request testing on
 one of the offending machines.
