I would say yes. A laptop with outdated firmware is far more useful than
a brick. Remember that on production machines there will be no recovery
method from a failed firmware update. If the full physical security on
the spi flash goes into place an EC firmware failure essentially turns the
board into trash.
If you are going to up date firmware in the field you need 2 power
sources. In places where there is no grid then a 2nd source of constant
power will needs to be required.
I suppose we can add in a manual override for the few cases where it will
be necessary but for the automatic update case (99.9%) 2 power sources
need to be present.
You could also further divide this into 2 different types of firmware
update. One that touches the EC code and one that updates OFW. OFW is
planned to have a fallback scheme so powerfails in that procedure will be
ok. Its an EC code update that is terminal.
