Comment:
Well, the HIG clearly specifies that we should NOT be using the D-pad to
move a cursor around:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_Human_Interface_Guidelines/The_Sugar_Interface/Input_Systems#The_Directional_Buttons
It's extraordinarily inefficient at such a task. However it is also true
that none of the activities actually do anything intelligent in this mode
yet. Perhaps something is better than nothing until we can do things the
right way? The correct implementation of hand-held mode will be to remove
the toolbars, thus eliminating the need to "click via mouse" at all.
Instead, there will be direct ways of manipulating the activities. In web
for instance, the D-pad can map to forward, back, prev-link, next-link,
and an action button on the right can follow the selected link. The
remaining action buttons could do other interesting things like show a
list of bookmarks to choose from, etc.
Marco, how much work do you think it would be to "do this right" for even
just one activity for demonstrative purposes. It seems that Read and
Browse are the prime targets. Right now we're more in control of Browse,
so perhaps it's a good place to start...
