 An FFT was the first thing that came to my mind. I didn't mention that
 because the actual method doesn't matter. There may be something better,
 perhaps involving a wavelet or chirplet transform. There may be a fast
 hack specific to audio, possibly dropping 1/10 second chunks.

 The 400MHz Geode need not be an unsolvable problem. Pitch bending can be
 done as soon as the instrument is selected. The results are then available
 for immediate use as the notes are played, with even less CPU usage than
 the existing method.
