#1302: kernel printk spew when removing mounted USB device

I had a vfat flash device mounted. I'd recently written some files, and I
had one shell with a current directory on the device. I forgot it was
mounted, and removed the device.
The resulting spew of error messages was quite spectacular. It made the
console unusable for quite some time, and it put lots of useless junk into
the log files.
One error message is quite enough.
Even if the GUI hides the spew, it still shouldn't be going to the log
files. Worse yet, the kernel may be delaying writes to removable media.
One must assume that hot-plug hardware will be hot plugged.
