 Jack is a local sound server only.  We need to be able to run applications
 across the network (e.g. from the school server): PulseAudio is designed
 for this. Its previous name was Polypaudio.

 PulseAudio and Jack are not mutually exclusive, though I will note that
 Jack is primarily used by professional audio people.
