 The recent problems with version numbers on the ALPS touchpad indicates
 that we should audit our drivers for "fail hard" behavior in the face of
 version number change.  Our drivers should presume if they see an
 increasing minor version number that that's ok, and just log their
 surprise, rather than "failing hard".
