 Turns out that the Ethernet did come up (see messages.gnu2 log) -- but
 when I clicked on an access point, !NetworkManager turned off my Ethernet.
 That's a bug, but not the one we thought we were chasing.  NM needs to be
 able to deal with machines with zero, one, or "more than one" working
 interfaces.
