 Only if you don't mind breaking random old applications (e.g. any motif
 and Xt based application ever made, to first order).

 The right solution is a set of aliases for the common antique bitmap
 fonts, so that non Xft based applications have a prayer of getting
 something they can deal with from outline fonts on the system.

 Cursor and fixed just get you the X server willing to start up at all.
