 I just managed to reproduce this problem ("Can't read CTR...") by
 accident.  It happened when I let the kernel auto-boot just after
 reflashing the firmware, without powering off first.  That is not a
 reasonable thing to do, but I wanted to see what would happen...

 This is hardly surprising, since the reflash process has to turn off the
 keyboard controller in the EC.  So the i8042 driver is trying to talk to
 an 8042 that isn't running.
