 When optimizing the black and white display, you often want to put the
 screen further back.

 Tilt back is a complex issue, driven almost totally by using the
 reflective display in laptop mode. To date, the need for further tilt has
 been different -- the awkward use by an adult on his or her laptop (for
 kids it works).

 The 2 solutions there are:

 a) making the hinge much taller so the sides don't interfere, this also
 results in a permanent gap between screen and battery/handle area.

 b) lowering the batteries creating a step on the bottom area below the
 keyboard.

 Leaving a gap and reverting to "blue" are not options. we see no choice
 but to explore a bevel and battery further, per your exploration above.
