 Ah. Helps if I copy the _whole_ of /lib/firmware/usb8388.bin into the NAND
 flash instead of a version which is truncated to 98304 bytes.

 Mea culpa.

 Still, it's a bizarre and unacceptable failure mode even though it's user
 error.
