 Last night Mark sent us a set of traces that helped us track down what we
 believe the problem is.  The script that starts up the machine is set up
 to handle waiting for devices to get ready for up to 60 seconds after the
 device appears on the bus.  However, it appears that there was a bug in
 that code that would actually cause the script to terminate before the
 device appeared.

 It's a one line fix and we're making a build now to test our hypothesis.
