I didn't put a lot of thinking into this, since we only started the UI
design recently. Though I'm pretty sure it will have to be in-process. We
want full control on the the layout of the device icons in the home view,
interaction with the icon will be different from desktops, the icon
background will have to be transparent, etc.

Oh there is really no support in sugar for this yet.

 OLPC, n770 etc.

If you have any doc or code about the interface I'd happy to have a look
and see if it's suitable for OLPC. The requirements for battery status in
the current design seem pretty simple:

 * A way to get the battery level
 * A way to get the remaining battery time
 * Notifications when these properties change (?)

If you are interested in seeing the user interface mockups let me know.
