Comment (by jg):
The immediate use mode we'll see is reading, in either xbook or the web
browser.
Depending on the situation and size of the text, you either want to see
whole pages, or go for better resolution on partial pages for easier
reading.
The other, big issue I see is the following: if we don't expose this, and
ignore the issue, and special case the web browser and/or book reader
only, applications may not be designed properly to work in either aspect
ratio, and hardware presumptions that are poor. What is more, by not
forcing the issue early, we'll see more UI's build without GUI builders,
which ease the problems of internationalization, accessibility, and
customization to different expertise levels. Hardwired conventional
applications (as opposed to applications such as drawing applications that
are primarily a user interface), will be much easier to make work well on
our systems. We need to help force this issue in the overall community
that their applications need to be adaptable to the screen well.
Someday we'll have a touch screen, and then most applications become
seriously interesting in either aspect ratio. My iPAQ experience is that
some applications are much easier to use when you have enough pixels in
the axis text is being displayed, and you may decide to rotate an
application because it is plain better to use that way.
Finally, if an application crashes while the screen is rotated, you'll
have no way to get back to "normal" orientation without a UI.
