Hi, ywwg!
Nope, we haven't received the unit yet, but I'm almost certain what's
wrong with it. S/W folks often don't realize how many supplier issues we
have to deal with in a build - especially when we are being as cost-
sensitive as we must be at OLPC.
A bug was found with the supplier's FPC connector for the LCD panel which
causes the plastic bridge above the cable to exert insufficient force to
prevent proper contact. The workaround, for what it's worth, is simply to
press with a KG or two of force downwards as you rub your finger across
that connector after the FPC cable is installed.
The real fix, which is already done, adds proper thickness to the plastic
bridge so that it does not bow outward and deform, thus ensuring proper
contact, and thereby ensuring a normal display. In other words, we fixed
this *during* the build process. That's precisely why most companies
never send out a first build to customers - it's normally never sooner
than the third build. But, at OLPC, we're pushing into so much new
territory that we're seeking very close collaboration with our launch
partners, which means involving them much more intimately with the
development process - both the good and the bad.
Please accept my apologies that you had to run into this!
Best Regards!
MarkF
