Well, there are two issues here:
The close button: I guess the stop button referred to is part of the
activity itself. By moving the actual close button out of the activity,
it should at least become clear after a little use that things in the
activity toolbar all belong to the activity. Then, of course, there is
the remarkably counter-inuitive shutdown 'x', which should definitely be
removed sooner rather than later, or at least replaced with a different
icon which means something stronger than "close." That leaves us with the
one in the menu, which is the one that should be used. Of course, we have
yet to see if this is clear enough, or discoverable. Getting rollovers
working (and drag'n'drop) in the Home screen is essential to really test
this out.
The colors: This is a problem, but it's not so much a design issue. At
present, the HIG has a full section on color and contrast in the Munsell
space. As long as the colors that we allow the children to choose are
constrained accordingly, this shouldn't be an issue. Right now, the color
chosen for the XO is random, right? We will have much more control once
they are selected by the user from a palette we give them. We could also
entertain the possibility of going back to a white frame, for high
contrast. We had early mockups of this, but they got left behind for no
reason. If it would aid in readability, we could try it out.
I'm reassigning this back to Marco, since the close button issues require
further implementation before we should undertake a redesign. Also,
Marco, you can take a white frame for a spin. Other than that, I think we
can ignore the colors for now; Walter has spent a lot of time on this, and
I think we all expect this color selection to be implemented. Once it is,
we can revisit it and see if the contrast is sufficient.
