Since my name has come up I should introduce myself and stop lurking the
Listserv.
I am a speech pathologist working on a Phd at Penn State. I am interested in
using the xo for children with communication disabilities.
I don't really know where to start but I have some interest in the project here
and found several people likeMs. Marden who are also interested when I was in
Boston.
I presented the idea at the American Speech Language Hearing Association
Convention this weekend and found a very positive response.
I have some ideas for alternative input Methods like scanning with a single
switch (which might be plugged into the microphone jack.)
I hope that some others who share this interest join up soon.
Thanks to all of you for your hard work and Continued interest in the children
with disabilities who need OLPC more than anyone.

Hello! I was just introduced to the idea of using OLPC as an
accessible communication device by Adam Bowker at the American
Speech-Language-Hearing Association convention. Thought I would join
the list and introduce my self. My name is Jennifer Marden. I'm a
speech-language pathologist in private practice in Boston,
Massachusetts. I specialize in non-speaking children and adults with
severe physical impairments who use computers or other low tech means
to communicate. Before becoming an SLP, I worked as a software
engineer for 14 years at Hewlett-Packard. Most of my time with HP was
spent in in the HP-UX lab (HP's version of Unix), working on file
systems (local and networked), virtual memory, and process management
OS internals. Most work was done in C, with a small amount of assembly
coding, and a lot of debugging in assembly. I would be interested in
helping out with development of communication systems based on the XO
for non-speaking people with various access needs and
cognitive/developmental levels. I'm pretty busy with my practice, so
I'm not sure how much time I could dedicate, but would love to be
involved!
